ENVIRONMENT & DIGITAL
Compare environment and digital rankings on world maps
Climate, land cover, power generation, waste, emissions, connectivity and safe water reveal different parts of the environment and infrastructure. Compare each with its own units and coverage.
01 / HOW TO READ
Check whether a measure is a total, share or access rate
Forest share is not total forest area, while electricity and CO₂ are shown per person. Mobile data counts subscriptions rather than unique users, and safely managed water follows specific availability and quality conditions.

Environment & digital ranking maps
Open a theme to compare countries on a ten-level heat map and check the complete ranking, country values, reference years and sources.
Forest area
This compares the share of surface area classified as forest, not the total number of forested square kilometres.
View the forest area ranking mapElectricity use per person
This is annual electricity use per person and reflects industry, climate, infrastructure and household use.
View the electricity use per person ranking mapCO₂ emissions per person
This covers fossil-fuel and industrial CO₂ per person, not every greenhouse gas or consumption-based emissions.
View the co₂ emissions per person ranking mapInternet use
This is the share using the internet recently; survey methods and reference years may differ.
View the internet use ranking mapSafely managed drinking water
This requires an improved source that is on premises, available when needed and free from specified contamination.
View the safely managed drinking water ranking mapMobile subscriptions
This counts subscriptions rather than unique people, so one person can hold multiple subscriptions.
View the mobile subscriptions ranking mapAnnual mean temperature
This is an area-weighted annual mean across each country’s territory, so it smooths out large regional and seasonal differences.
View the annual mean temperature ranking mapAnnual sunshine hours (station median)
This is the median annual sunshine among reporting stations, not a countrywide average; station coverage and reference period matter.
View the annual sunshine hours (station median) ranking mapMean relative humidity
This is an area-weighted annual mean across each country’s territory; it smooths out regional and seasonal differences.
View the mean relative humidity ranking mapDesert climate area share
This is the land share classified as hot or cold desert climate (BWh or BWk) in Köppen–Geiger; it is not sandy land cover.
View the desert climate area share ranking mapSolar share of electricity
This is solar generation as a share of total electricity generation, not installed capacity or all final energy use.
View the solar share of electricity ranking mapRenewable share of electricity
This is renewable electricity as a share of total generation, not the renewable share of all final energy consumption.
View the renewable share of electricity ranking mapMunicipal-waste plastic generation
This multiplies projected 2022 municipal solid-waste generation by its plastic share; it excludes industrial and agricultural plastic waste.
View the municipal-waste plastic generation ranking mapMunicipal waste generated per person
This is projected municipal solid waste generated per person in 2022, not the amount collected or treated, and normally excludes industrial waste.
